It’s been one of those days that calls for a whole lot of chocolate. You know the kind, don’t you?

The kind that makes writing a super fun and profound post rather difficult… because nothing sounds better right now than making a pillow-and-blanket-nest, and then proceeding to ignore the world until tomorrow morning. Late morning, if possible.

If there’s a chocolate cake that accompanies you into that comfy, warm nest… all the better.

Unfortunately, we’re (supposedly) mature adults with things called responsibilities and schedules and appointments to keep (and posts to publish)… so no pillow-and-blanket-nest for the weary. To compensate, let’s have that last piece of chocolate cake and talk about… chocolate.

(When I say “let’s have”, I mean “I’ll have and you can look at mouthwatering pictures”.)

The chocolate cake in question is healthy, allergy friendly and paleo, and it’s recipe will be published… next week. I know. I know. I’m super mean. (You can get that super amazing paleo chocolate cake recipe here!)

But good things come to those that wait, and we’ll talk about something just as amazing today. That is, we’ll talk about the healthy paleo and vegan chocolate frosting which takes the chocolate cake from delicious to utter perfection.

Wait, HEALTHY chocolate ganache? Why yes, indeed.

In fact, this recipe has been floating round the Internet for quite some time now – and it’s definitely worth all the hype. Here’s what we’ll need:

ripe avocados

cocoa powder

honey or maple syrup

That’s right: we’re talking chocolate avocado frosting. Now, before you pronounce me totally insane – hear me out.

The avocado gives this vegan chocolate frosting its silky smooth, decadent consistency and the luscious shine that marks a good chocolate ganache. And – provided you use suitably ripe avocados – you can’t actually taste the avocados! (Pinky promise.)

You can slather this healthy vegan ganache onto just about anything – cake, brownies, a spoon… It’s a tough call, simply because it’s so darn delicious.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium avocados, peeled and de-seeded (they have to be perfectly ripe!)
  • 3/4 cups (60 g) cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (135 g) maple syrup of honey (you can add more if you want a sweeter frosting – add 1 additional tbsp at a time, tasting as you go)

Instructions

  • In a food processor or blender, blend the avocados until smooth.

  • Add the cocoa powder and (liquid) sweetener of choice, and blend until all ingredients are fully combined. You should get about 1 1/2 - 2 cups of silky smooth, shiny chocolate ganache.

  • You can eat the ganache as a pudding or use it to frost cakes, cupcakes or brownies.

  • The healthy paleo & vegan chocolate frosting keeps well in a closed container in the fridge for 3 - 4 days.

  1. It’s amazing! Don’t doubt it just because it has avocado. I literally tastes just like chocolate frosting. I did add about a tablespoon of oat milk (you could use almond milk too) to make is easier to puree the avocado.

  2. Sooo good! I used to make this with just a hand mixer but it was always very chunky so realizing i could make it in the Vitamix was awesome! And yes it is so good that i am eating it with a spoon right now 🙂

  5. Ummmmm holy cow! This is delicious! I’m going to need to hide the evidence of avocados because I think I can safely say my family will eat it and never know. It’s fantastic! I added some salt and a bit more maple. Perfection!

  6. Hi! This frosting sounds so healthy and delicious at the same time and I would love to make it! I do have one question though, can I pipe this frosting, or is it only for spreading onto desserts?

    Reply

    • Hi Gracie, the frosting isn’t really firm enough for piping, it’s best for spreding.

  7. Thanks. This recipe worked perfectly. (I used Manuka honey.) It turned out looking just like your pictures and “behaved” beautifully both as frosting and as pudding. No sugar rush after eating, either. Delighted. Thanks again. Ruth Whetsel

  11. Do you think I could add a scoop of peanut butter to this? Trying to find a sugar-free frosting for my 1-year-old’s cake, and he LOOOOVES avocados, so this is looking fabulous! I want to add PB to it though, if possible!

    • You can definitely add peanut butter to it, it should be delicious! 🙂

  13. I was skeptical about this recipe, but after numerous failed frostings made with coconut cream or coconut oil, I finally decided I would try this one . . . . OMG, it is incredible and it is so easy to make!!! The recipe is excellent for a pudding/ganache. I added another 1/4 c of maple syrup for frosting. This recipe will be in my list of GREAT, FOOL-PROOF RECIPES . . . . THANK YOU!!!!

  14. I can’t believe how incredibly awesome this ganache is! As i was pouring in my very expensive organic maple syrup I muttered, “this could be a very expensive mistake…..I will leave a reply!” Best frosting of ALL kinds: dairy, paleo, whatever! Thank you!

  16. Hi! Can’t wait to make this. Planning on making it for my nephew’s birthday. How long with the frosting keep?

    Reply

    • Hi Megan! As the frosting contains avocados, I would make it at most a day or two ahead and keep refrigerated.

  17. Can i use honey instead of maple syrup or a combination of both???

  18. Hi, I’m planning to use this recipe for my daughters birthday party this weekend however I would like to do 32 mini cupcakes instead of a big cake. Would I double the recipe and what oven temp/ baking time do you think would work best?

    • Hi Natalie! My vegan+gluten free chocolate cupcakes are pretty much what you’ve described and should work perfectly 🙂 Here’s the link to the recipe.

  19. hello, this seems like a great recipe. what can I substitute the arrowroot flour with? Since I don’t have access to it where I live. I do not mind non-paleo flours.
    Could you please help?
    Thanks

    • Hi Misheline! I’m assuming you’re talking about the paleo chocolate cake recipe, rather than the paleo frosting recipe? For the cake, you can use cornflour, it should give the same results! 🙂
