I’m sure you’re wondering if wontons made in the air fryer taste as good as those that are deep fried.

Air Fryer Wontons with Pork Filling - Cooks in 10 Minutes! (3)

Our family has taste-tested them several times (such a hard job!), and we all agree that there’s no difference in taste. The air fryer wontons don’t puff up as much in the center as ones deep fried in oil, so they are overall more crispy.

Brushing the uncooked wontons with oil helps to ensure a the wrappers get crispy. You could also spray with cooking spray, but I had better results with vegetable oil.

To Make Air Fryer Wontons, You Will Need:

To make these delicious fried wonton appetizers, you will need these kitchen supplies and ingredients:

Useful kitchen tools for this recipe

  • Air Fryer– I recommend using a larger-capacity air fryer for this recipe so you can fit more wontons in the basket. I used our 5-in-1 Ninja Foodi Grill to make air fryer wontons.
  • Pastry brush– Use to brush the uncooked wontons with oil to prepare for air frying.
  • Cutting Board – Use a large cutting board for chopping the green onions, then use it as a surface for folding the wontons.
  • Wax Paper – To prevent the uncooked wontons from sticking, place the filled dumplings on wax paper.
  • Baking Sheet – Use baking sheets lined with wax paper and paper towels to hold uncooked and air fried wontons, respectively.
  • Tongs – Use kitchen tongs to flip wontons halfway through cooking in the air fryer.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Wontons

  • Ground sausage or pork– I made these wontons using ground breakfast sausage, but you can also use ground pork.
  • Wonton Wrappers – Wonton wrappers are thin square sheets of dough, usually sold in packs of 50. You can normally find them in the produce section of the grocery store.
  • Green Onion – Thinly sliced green onion adds flavor to the wonton filling, and you may also want to save some to sprinkle in the dipping sauce you serve with them.
  • Soy Sauce –Made from fermented soybeans, salt and water, soy sauce adds a slightly salty, umami flavor, to dishes.
  • Egg– A beaten egg helps bind the wonton filling together.
  • Salt and sugar – Add these seasonings to the wonton filling.
  • Sesame Oil– You only need a teaspoon or an entire batch, but sesame oil adds a nutty flavor to the wontons. The darker the oil, the more intense the flavor.
  • Vegetable Oil – While traditional wontons are deep fried, you only need a little bit of oil to brush on the stuffed dumplings for this recipe. You can spray them with cooking spray, but they come out better when you use oil.
  • Water – You’ll need a Tablespoon of water for the wonton filling, plus more to moisten and seal the wonton wrappers.

How to Make Air Fryer Wontons

  1. Prepare the wonton filling by mixing together the ground sausage, egg, green onion, soy sauce, salt, sugar, sesame oil and water.
  2. Put a teaspoon of the sausage mixture in the center of a wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, and fold to form a triangle. Seal the edges of each wonton and pinch the corners together to make dumplings. Place folded wontons on wax paper lined baking sheets until ready to air fry. (For tips on how to fold wonton wrappers, including a helpful video, make sure you check out my original post for fried wontons.)
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees. If your air fryer does not have a preheat function, turn the heat on for 5 to 10 minutes prior to adding the wontons to the fryer basket.
  4. Brush wontons lightly with vegetable oil on both sides.Air Fryer Wontons with Pork Filling - Cooks in 10 Minutes! (4)
  5. Place the wontons a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for 5 minutes at 375 degrees.Air Fryer Wontons with Pork Filling - Cooks in 10 Minutes! (5)
  6. After five minutes, flip the wontons and air fry for at least 5 more minutes, until brown, crispy and cooked through. Depending on your particular air fryer, you may need to add more time. Cut into a wonton to check for doneness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make wontons ahead of time and cook them later?

If you don’t want to air fry the wontons immediately, you can store them in an air tight container in the refrigerator overnight. I recommend placing them on wax paper to prevent sticking. If you have to stack the wontons, make sure to put wax paper between the layers.

When it’s time to cook them, remove the wontons from the refrigerator, brush with oil and air fry as directed.

Can I freeze wontons and cook them later?

Yes, you can freeze these wontons before frying and cook them later.

To freeze, place filled and folded wontons on a baking sheet lined with wax paper, making sure they’re not touching one another. Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and freeze for several hours before transferring the wontons to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container.

When you’re ready to cook them, brush the wontons with vegetable oil or spray the with cooking spray. Preheat air fryer to 375 degrees and cook wontons in a single layer for 12 to 14 minutes, turning halfway through. Test for doneness before serving.

Air Fryer Pork Wontons

Each fried wonton is filled with a juicy flavorful bite of pork and green onions, accented with soy and sesame flavors. They’re wonderfully crispy around the edges, but chewy and toothsome where the wonton wrapper dough puffs around the filling.
